It\u2019s true that you need to pay attention to the person with whom you\u2019re speaking, but recently I realized it\u2019s more than that.<\/p>\n<p>A little bit of context for the reader: I lean very heavily toward the introvert side of the spectrum. I feel I am a fantastic listener&#8230; As long as the other person is willing to talk! Lol<br \/>\nAt one point in a conversation I always run in to an awkward pause (whether it\u2019s because the other person has run out of things to say, or they, too, lean toward introversion.)<br \/>\nAlthough I\u2019m a good listener, I\u2019m a HORRIBLE conversationalist! Lol<\/p>\n<p>This is where my recent discovery comes into play.<\/p>\n<p>A similar phrase to \u201cgood listener\u201d exists in Japanese, too, and it is also what makes for a good conversational partner.<\/p>\n<p>That phrase is \u201c\u805e\u304d\u4e0a\u624b\u201d (read: kiki joe-zuu\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>The most commonly used Japanese word for \u201clisten\u201d is \u201c\u805e\u304f\u201d (read: kiku). (There are a few other variations like \u8074\u304f or \u8033\u3092\u50be\u3051\u308b, and what have you, but I\u2019ll put them aside for this discussion.)<br \/>\nBut, \u201ckiku\u201d is also the word used to represent the word \u201cask\u201d or \u201cinterview.\u201d<br \/>\nAn interviewer is sometimes called \u201c\u805e\u304d\u624b\u201d (read: Kiki teh).<br \/>\nIn the Japanese concept of a \u201cgood listener,\u201d the person not only knows to shut their mouth when someone else is talking, but they also know how to ASK the right questions!<\/p>\n<p>That was a lightbulb moment for me right there.
